Akili is a grassroots charity organization undertaking school projects to give orphans and vulnerable children living in the Obunga slums sound care and high quality educational opportunities. The Obunga slums is characterized by many problems such as high levels of unemployment, poor housing infrastructure, lack of health care, high levels of poverty and child abuse.
Challenges Facing The Children in Obunga
Many parents in Obunga do not see education as a top priority as a result of alcohol and drug misuse while others cannot afford to pay fees for their children. Primary school education in Kenya is free, however pre-school education is not. This means that many young children below the age of sixthe years cannot access pre-school education since their parents are unable to pay school fees. The children also lack basic things like books, pens, uniforms, shoes, lunch and medicine. We are committed to giving these children the best education that will enable them to enhance their lives and break the vicious circle of poverty they live in.
How will Akili Project solve these Challenges?
Our goal at Akili is to provide good quality early childhood education and care to the children living in the Obunga slum and make it a center of excellence serving children in need. We endeavor to provide school supplies such as books, pens & pencils, crayons, uniforms, lunch, toys, vocational bible study materials (VBS) and other school supplies for these children while finding sustainable ways of paying salaries for our teachers so that Akili becomes a tuition free school increasing access to education for the needy and vulnerable children living in Obunga slums.
Potential Long Term Impact
This project will help over 90% of the children in the Obunga slum to access quality education for free, get school supplies and uniforms, and get one nutritious meal a day leading to improved performance. This will also benefit the community through reduced crime and also increase the incomes of the children when they reach adulthood, thereby enabling them to break the vicious circle of poverty that they currently live in. This project will also provide jobs for women as teachers empowering them to take care of their families. Currently the school employees 4 female teachers. With your support we can provide the children with opportunities that would have otherwise eluded them.
The key to success of this project will be your support. You can donate, volunteer to sell beaded jewelry for the school in your neighborhood, organize book/supplies drives, mission trips to volunteer at the school, sponsor a teacher or construction of a classroom and so on. AKILI PROJECT WISH LIST
1. We are seeking for funds to support Akili School feeding program for the children. $5 can feed 10 children one meal a day (lunch) for one day. $25 can feed 10 children one meal a day for one week (5 days). The lunch program ensures that all children get one nutritious meal a day even those who would have missed at home improving their concentration and performance in class.

2. We are seeking for funds to pay salaries for our teachers. We have 4 teachers each earning $82 per month. The children pay about $8monthly towards teachers’ wages and purchase of supplies. $8 can pay fees for one child for a month, $24 for one term and $96 for an entire school year. You can also choose to support a teacher with $82per month, $246 per term, and $984 for the entire school year.
3. Donations for 2 new classrooms for the next school year 2014; our target is to raise $ 1,800, towards building 2 classrooms in fall this year in readiness for admission of 2nd graders in January, 2014. Any donation, small or big is welcome.
4. We are looking for volunteers who can organize book and supply drives for the school, mission and volunteer trips to Kenya to teach the children and train our teachers, and raise funds for the project in order to meet its goals of transforming the lives of children in Obunga through education.
These are some of the beaded items that we sell to raise money to pay the teachers and buy supplies for the children. It costs $77 to ship 10lbs containing about 100 items to the USA. The items can go for between $5 and $10 each. We are looking for volunteers who can sell these items in their neighborhood, church, schools, local shops and to friends at work on behalf of the children and raise funds for the school. This will go a long way in making the school self-sustainable, buying supplies for the children, paying teachers, buying desks and chairs and putting up new classrooms this fall for the next school year.
