Setting goals is a crucial aspect of personal and professional growth. It is a roadmap toward success, providing direction and motivation. It is therefore important for high school students to learn the skill of goal-setting early on. At our scholarship program, we recently organized a one-day retreat focused on goal-setting for high school students. Our teachers and staff held one-on-one sessions with the scholarship students, evaluating their performance, and assisting them in setting new academic targets. We focused particularly on STEM subjects as our program aims to encourage more girls to pursue STEM education. While setting academic goals, we stressed the importance of setting SMART goals- Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. By doing so, we encouraged students to set goals that were specific, realistic and had a deadline for completion. During these sessions, we also emphasized the importance of self-regulation and self-direction. Students learned how to develop a growth mindset and take control of their learning to achieve their goals. We discussed strategies for effective time management and improving their study habits. We believe that by teaching these skills, we are empowering our students to become independent learners and take responsibility for their academic success. Additionally, we provided social-emotional support to students who were struggling with various challenges. Some students had difficulties with time management, while others faced anxiety and self-esteem issues. We listened to each student's concerns, provided relevant resources, and motivated them to overcome their challenges. By doing so, we aim to encourage students to become more self-aware and resilient. We believe that the goal-setting exercise will have a positive impact on our students. By equipping them with the tools and skills needed to set and achieve goals, we are laying a foundation for their future success. We hope that our students will take these lessons to heart and apply them in all aspects of their lives. At our scholarship program, we remain committed to empowering girls through education, mentorship, and goal-setting.
